E 8-15
The building Easterly was a rare treat and a great breeze for opening night 2001. Six boats mustered for three action packed races. For the first two races it seemed like we were all getting the winter kinks out, making mistakes and botching the spinnaker work. It all fell together in the last race when the breeze shifted a bit South and built to the low teens with long sustained gusts. Neartly everyone caught the plane on the first downwind leg and the action at the leeward mark was exciting. Crews hiked the max on the second beat and several boats broke away by the windward mark, planing part of the leg and battling for position at the finish.
Race committee work was equally well done, with the Schatz crew arriving early to set up a fine course. They got us off promptly at 1800 and kept the pace up to get all three races in well before sundown. Thanks to Al and crew.
